Sudden engagement drop in lightweight puzzle interactions?

In order to better understand how users behave during brief cognitive tasks, I've been testing a few lightweight word-puzzle-style interactions. However, I've noticed something strange: after a few rounds, people start out strong but quickly lose interest. I'm not sure if they're confused by the pacing, the difficulty jump, or a lack of direction.

Similar patterns in letter based challenges, where users pause or disengage as the complexity increases, were brought up in a recent conversation. It got me thinking about how much of this is UX flow versus the interaction's fundamental mechanics.

Has anyone else seen this type of drop-off in interactive or conversational experiences? I'd be interested in knowing which indicators you use to determine where users become disinterested.
