Is there a way to send an automatic Out of Office answer for an individual team member when their status would be set to "away" or "away and reassigning"?
Would be very helpful to manage expectations of customers.

As far as I'm aware this can only be done on a 'team' basis, not individual user. But as a proxy solution, you can set your status to 'away':
And reassign any replies to messages to your default inbox
