Hi, There is a bug during the creation of an email template from HTML.
1) Start creating a new e-mail template
2) Switch to HTML editor
3) Paste long HTML code
4) Click e-Mail subject and try insert attributes
You will get:
Attribute window hides in front of the editor 
BTW: Attributes are not supporting in HTML editor (This is a feature request).

When you say that attributes are not supported in the HTML editor, can you tell me a little more about what you mean? It's possible to add variables to the body of a HTML email by formatting them like this {{attribute_name|fallback:FALLBACK}}.
