Where can I find more information about unread message notifications for a custom launcher?

5 years ago when we installed intercom into our suite of web and mobile applications, our custom messenger launcher would display the total number of unread messages as a small red circle near our custom launcher. This was a great way to let someone know they have a message waiting. However, I've realized it disappeared, and am having a very difficult time bringing the red circle with the volume of unread messages back so it is displayed near our custom launcher.

My investigation did reveal that we were/are using the "old" version of messenger, so I upgraded one of my test workspaces to the new messenger, hoping that it would resolve the issue, but it did not. That said, the "messages" icon inside the updated messenger DOES display the total unread notifications, but because that red notice isn't visible when the messenger is closed, the user does not know a message is waiting. Help! Thank you
