Save Drafts for Side Conversations

The new UI update on inbox may have affected the behavior of side conversations.

Current behavior:
When composing an email in a side-conversation, closing the sidebar discards the draft entirely. Reopening the sidebar shows an empty compose field.

Expected behavior/previous behavior: Drafts should be preserved when the sidebar is closed and reopened, consistent with how regular conversation drafts already behave.

It's common to need the main Intercom window for research, looking up customer details, or referencing other conversations while drafting an email reply. Having to keep the sidebar open the entire time (or risk losing the draft) makes this awkward, and aligning side-conversation behavior with regular conversation behavior would remove that friction.

Thanks!

Hi @LouiseKlein 👋  Karla here from the community team here!

Thanks so much for taking the time to lay this out, it’s super clear and really helpful.

What you’re seeing right now is expected behavior for side conversations. If the panel is closed before sending, the draft isn’t saved. That’s different from the main Inbox composer, where drafts are preserved when you switch context.

Totally get why this is frustrating, especially when you need to hop around the Inbox to gather details while writing. You shouldn’t have to choose between doing that and keeping your draft. For now, the safest workaround is to keep the side-conversation panel open while finishing your message, or draft it elsewhere, like a note or doc, and paste it in when you’re ready to send.

I’ve shared your feedback with the team as a feature request to bring draft-saving to side conversations and align it with the main composer. I can’t promise a timeline, but specific examples like yours are exactly what help drive improvements here.
