Closing the chat window isn’t intuitive

Many customers report difficulty closing the chat window after engaging with Fin or a support rep. Specifically:

  • User expectation: They intuitively look for an X button in the upper-right corner, a standard UI convention for closing modal windows or chat interfaces.

  • Current behavior: The only way to close the chat is by clicking the chat icon again in the bottom corner. This is not visually obvious or intuitive to many users.

This leads to:

  • Poor user experience: Causes friction and confusion, especially for new users or those in a hurry.

  • Increased support load: The issue is so widespread that the team has had to create a snippet in Fin to explain how to close the chat, just to reduce the number of repetitive questions.

  • Cognitive overhead: Users are left guessing, which breaks the otherwise seamless UX of the support flow.

Suggested solution

Introduce a visible "X" close button in the upper-right corner of the chat window (when expanded). Ideally:

  • It should follow conventional design standards (hover-highlighted, accessible).

  • Clicking it should minimize the chat, just like clicking the chat icon currently does.

  • Optional: Add a tooltip on hover to say "Minimize chat".

Great suggestion @Daniel Rönnberg, although I suspect it might not be impactful enough for Intercom to add it on their roadmap. We also occasionally encounter such complaints and have added specific Fin content with step-by-step instructions for addressing it.

On another note, it would also be very useful for users to be able to move the chat widget around the screen by default (without the need for custom launchers, etc.).

@Daniel Rönnberg  I’ve also seen some people struggle with this as well, I understand the minimize arrow at the bottom of the chat helps people know when they click it -- they won’t lose their chat history but it does seem intuitive to add the x at the top even a small one to give people the option to go where the muscle memory leads.

That being said, this doesn’t seem to be the first time this has come up, and it does appear if you want this you can enable the custom launcher and it shows up automatically according to some of the other threads where they are talking about adding a close button to the messenger.   So let’s see like @Luka Dujmovic  mentioned whether adding this as a feature request will bubble it up to a priority level that seems to help.  I feel you’ve made a good case for it for sure!

Thank you both for your answers. I actually tried creating a custom launcher from the Messenger settings, but that didn’t work. I’ll leave it for now, but would be nice if this could be improved in the future. 🤝

Our users are are reporting the same thing. They are looking for an X button and getting frustrated when they can’t figure out how to close the Messenger.
