Why does my Email audience count look less than I expect?

When creating a Proactive Email, we often get asked why the audience size is smaller than using the same filters in the Contacts page. Let’s break down the main reason this can happen!

With email messages, we automatically exclude users that:

  1. Don't have an email
  2. Have unsubscribed from you
  3. Have marked your emails as spam
  4. Have bounced any emails you've sent to them

If you want a more accurate list of the users who would be in your email audience, you can see this in Contacts by using the same filters in your message and then additionally adding Email is unknown and Unsubscribed from Emails is false or Marked email as spam is false or Has hard bounced is false.
